Introduction
This guide was written to help the beginner understand the basics of the Pirates of the Burning Sea economy and to help him get started on participating in it. Whether you are a Freetrader just starting out on your career, or a naval offier, privateer or even pirate wanting a piece of the trading action, this is the place to look for answers to your newbie questions.
If you haven't done it yet, the first thing to do is visit the Auctioneer of your starting town and take the mission called "The Economy: Starting Out". He sends you to one of eight possible locations, depending on your nationality and level. At each of these locations, there will be a freetrader NPC who will guide you through the Economy tutorial. The mission NPC and his/her assistant basically walk you through a tutorial aimed at teaching you the basics of the economy, so some of the content of this guide may be covered in that mission.
One important thing to remember is that each account is limited to ten lots for building trade structures. All structures, with the exception of large shipyards, use up one lot per structure so unless you are planning on becoming a shipwright, this translates into a ten-structure limit.
Before you can even start building your production structures, you will need to build a warehouse at your selected port. Warehouses do not count towards your 10-lot limit, do not require upkeep and suffer no taxes, but it does cost you to build one. The first one costs 200 doubloons to build, but since the tutorial also provides you with seed money, you could say that the first one is pretty much free.
After talking to you about warehouses, the Freetrader contact will refer you to one of two associates who will continue the tutorial. I hope you picked wisely, as the port you chose will most likely be your first base of operations. I have listed the beginning ports below, with the resources available at each port of choice, but you might want to look up these locations on a map as well, in order to see where they lie in relation to the rest of your potential market.

Once you have your warehouse, you can build up to ten structures on the same port. (Since this is a beginner’s guide, we are not even considering the large structures that require more than one lot, so for now let’s go with the 10-structure premise. ) The first thing you’ll need is a Deed for the structure you want. If you took the Draughtsman’s Office Deed as a final quest reward at the end of the tutorial, you won’t have a problem finding deeds for the basic structures because you’ll be able to produce them yourself. Otherwise, you can probably find the deed that you need at the Auction House.
The deed lists the materials you will need in order to build your structure. Note that some structures also require the presence of certain resources. For example, in order to build a Gold Mine, the port on which you are building it has to have gold deposits. Aside from wood and gravel, which you should be able to produce yourself, you will also need other building materials like granite, hemp rope, iron and leather, which you will have to obtain from another player directly or through the Auction House. Plus, you will also need 1,000 doubloons as part of your construction cost. Given the costs involved in setting up a structure, it’s best if you examined your options and decide what you really want to build before taking the plunge.
Once your structure is up, you start paying upkeep on it. Upkeep ranges from 100 to 1,200 doubloons per week per structure.
Each structure comes with a default set of recipes. Advanced recipes are loot drops so you will most likely find them at the Auction House. As a beginner, you should be able to get by with the default recipes and don’t need to worry about buying some more.
Raw material recipes only require two things: labor and money. Labor is accumulated and stored on your structure in real time whether you are ingame or not. So if you are away from your gold mine for 24 hours for example, and a gold ore recipe requires 2 hours of stored labor, you will be able to produce 12 units of the output once you get back. Manufacturing recipes may require raw materials or other intermediate goods as input, in addition to labor and money.
